We only swipe our credit cards for things in our budget, and we use the cards occasionally to tap into points and travel rewards! I think one day we may swipe our CC for pretty much everything, but I need to create some new inserts to help me better manage that first 😅⁣

They’re usually 5-10 mins, once a week, while the kids are finishing up their dinner (I like for them to hear us speaking positively about money and budgeting). ⁣

Probably once every 3 months I run investment/debt payoff projections and let him know where we stand there. He finds it riveting 🤣😭⁣

More context:⁣
🔸We have *almost* fully combined finances. Our joint checking acct takes in all income and fuels 95% of our budget. That last bit is split 50/50 into Hubby Funds and Wifey Funds (individual checking accounts).⁣
🔸”Cool down laps” are budgets where I let up a little on investing/savings efforts so we can have a bit more fun money.⁣

Where our money went 🤓

Thanks to the Google Sheet, these worksheets only take me 5-10 mins to fill in.

When I’m all done, I highlight focus areas to make the 2-page spread a little easier on the eyes.

The primary intent: verify we’re still on track to meet our money goals! I mainly look at investing to make sure it’s the highest percentage, and the areas that are competing with it. A 25% savings rate (investing rate, that is, and based on take-home pay) was our average in Q1 so we’re working to get back to that.

Note: the percentages are based on money that went out. They are not percentages of income. It’s quite easy to track that, though, with earned income explicitly outlined up above.

Our food spending is quite high right now, and I won’t even blame inflation. 🤣 Meal planning/execution needs sharpening. It’s that simple. When we peak $400 over budget like we have, the cash envelope comes out to help us build discipline.

In the end, the entire budgeting process start to finish brings me peace and excitement for the future. We’re not perfect, but we work hard and manage our money with intention 😌
