I’m not referring to those retiring based on time of service.

Pension plan timelines are what they are, and retiring at different times based on these timelines is natural and makes perfect sense.

This question is directed to couples who don’t combine their money and don’t have pension plans as part of their current/future financial landscape.

Will you pool resources later to retire together? When one person retires, is the mutual understanding that the other person will keep working until he/she can retire? Even if that person would prefer to stop working too?

Retiring together isn’t for everyone.

My take: retirement is a joint goal, and meeting that joint goal means combining finances. Even if my husband and I didn’t want to retire at around the same time, we would still combine finances.

Books & how they impacted my money mindset

First up: The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy.

This one was life-changing. And I don’t say that lightly.

There were a few pages dedicated to the habit of tracking, and Hardy actually prompts you in the book to pick something yourself to track.

I chose social media.

I noticed I’d become desensitized to the weekly screen time alert and I found myself feeling low and uncertain as an entrepreneur. These feelings were heightened when I mindlessly scrolled socials.

I grabbed a field notebook and tracked every time I used Insta & TT. I wrote the duration and a little snippet of what I’d done during my time on the app.

After 3 days, I found myself irritated with my own behavior and lack of self-control. I didn’t want to log any more mindless scrolling, so I stopped opening the apps. I realized I needed to be much more intentional if I wanted socials to have less control over me.

By day 5, I was back in the driver’s seat. (I read TCE in conjunction with Who are you Following by Sadie Robertson Huff. I narrowed who I follow down to a handful of people while reading her book. The 2 books together helped me commit and not look back.)

I love opening my apps and knowing exactly what/who I’m going to see. It constricts my consumption. In this season of entrepreneurship, I clearly need that.

Tracking your spending is something I’ve done myself and coached others to do for years.

It’s fundamental to money mastery.

When you do it initially, you start to realize what types of spending really bother you - the ones that seem to have more control than you do.

Stick with tracking and you find yourself spending less in that area.

Keep sticking with it and you MAINTAIN the money behaviors you want. And if you slip, you course-correct quickly.

One small habit with an astounding impact.

I’ve coached several high-earners who tried to skip this step and wondered why they weren’t getting wealthy!

it’s that your budget needs to evolve WITH you.

Take it from someone who has:
🔹gotten divorced
🔹remarried
🔹had her dream wedding + honeymoon
🔹combined finances with my husband
🔹had 2 children
🔹changed careers (and industries) a few times
🔹purchased a home
🔹visited somewhere new every year with plans to continue
…and is still on track to retire by 45.

2️⃣ Pay off your entire cc balance as fast as possible, leaving enough in your checking acct to cover the essentials + a bit of a cushion
3️⃣ Once you’re at $0 in cc debt, begin to ONLY swipe your card for things that are already in your budget. (Make frequent payments so you don’t fall behind.)

It’s simply not a healthy habit. It’s too easy to get caught in the debt trap that way.

I see this in almost every payday routine video 😩

Paycheck hits…make credit card payments.

Seemingly harmless, I know. But it is problematic and we need to unpack it!

We should never swipe against money we haven’t earned yet. Even though we know how credit cards work - we have to pay off what we spend on the cards and if we don’t pay in full and on time, we are charged interest - we are setting ourselves up for failure with this pattern of paying for last month’s spending.

I’ll break down how to stop this vicious loop in part ✌🏽!
